August has arrived, and with it comes another fun collection of quirky, tasty, and thought-provoking reasons to celebrate. From watermelon and beer to bow ties, dogs, and even Pluto, this month's lineup is full of unexpected facts, local recommendations, and Carla's signature sense of humor. Aug. 3 - WATERMELON DAY
Watermelons are 92% water, are classified both as fruit and vegetable, and the rind is edible. You go first!
Aug. 7 - INTERNATIONAL BEER DAY
The post popular beer by volume is China's Snow Beer. Domestically, Negro Modelo is the #1 import, based on sales.
Aug. 7 - LIGHTHOUSE DAY
Maine's coastline and the Outer Banks are recommended for lighthouse viewing. The only actively manned lighthouse is Boston Light on Little Brewster Island, in Boston Harbor.
Aug. 8 - HAPPINESS HAPPENS DAY
If you put things in perspective, you can find happiness in most things! I dedicate this day to our late neighbor and my dear friend, Janis Timberlake, master of positive thinking.
Aug. 17 - THRIFT SHOP DAY
Thrift shopping went mainstream with Gen Z. Foot traffic at secondhand stores now outpaces traditional retail. An option close to us is the Salvation Army, west on Rt. 236.
Aug. 24 - PLUTO DEMOTED DAY
20 years ago, Pluto was demoted from our 9th planet to "dwarf planet." Shouldn't poor Pluto get credit for time served, and be grandfathered-in?
Aug. 26 - DOG APPRECIATION DAY
The most popular breed in the U.S. is currently the French Bulldog. Bring your pooch by the Cameron Cafe patio for water and doggie treats.
Aug. 28 - BOW TIE DAY
Bow ties are traditionally worn with formal attire but are also donned by professionals who want to project individuality, quirkiness, or intellectual charm. My dad was a bow tie guy. I'm not sure how he'd feel about the term "quirkiness."
Aug. 30 - FRANKENSTEIN DAY
I hope you know that Frankenstein was NOT the name of Mary Shelley's 1818 monster. Dr. Victor Frankenstein was the scientist who created the monster.
Aug. 31 - EAT OUTSIDE DAY
Great to enjoy if it's not too hot, cold, humid, or buggy. A few places I've visited that have fans on their patios include Firebird (Kingstowne), Silver Dinner (Rt. 7), and Zikrayet Restaurant and Lounge (Eisenhower).
Carla Besosa has been a Cameron Station resident since 2000, and a Compass contributor for more than 20 years. She earned the title of "Cameron Station Foodie" for the many restaurant reviews she wrote for the newsletter, many of which can be found in The Compass archives on the community website, www.cameronstation.org. Carla is a huge supporter of Cameron Station and very tuned into the fun and delicious ways to enjoy life in and around our community.
